Yes, you read that right. Banana tea. A few months ago, I was researching foods that help us sleep and ran across this one and guess what folks? It really works. Only it's not just the bananas that are doing it. It's the peel. The part that I have been throwing away for years contains some amazing nutrition that your body may be craving if sleep is an issue for you.
It is widely know that Americans as a whole do not get enough sleep. Electronics and our on-the-go lifestyles keeps us awake longer and keeps us from sleeping soundly. Lack of sleep can keep us from losing weight, disrupt our hormone levels, and cause stress which makes us more susceptible to disease.
How does it work? Quite simply, bananas, especially the peel, contain loads of potassium, magnesium, and tryptophan- you know, the stuff that makes you fall asleep after eating turkey at Thanksgiving. Tryptophan increases serotonin. Serotonin is the feel good hormone that helps your mood and your sleep. Who doesn't need more of that?
Making banana tea is even more simple. Boil 1 banana peel to 1 cup of water for 10 minutes. That's it. Strain and drink. I've simplified the process a bit in my house by freezing banana peels as we use the bananas in a ziplock bag in the freezer. Then, I do one giant batch for the week and store in glass jars in the fridge. I add a little cinnamon and stevia to sweeten. I love it hot in the winter months, but I'm finding that it is a refreshing before bed cold drink too. Sleep well.
